Skip McKinstry
My work is about the beautiful, enchanted world we live in and the struggle to see it. St. Augustine described it this way, “We are on a road—in spiritual, not spatial terms— and one blocked as it were by thorny hedgerows.” Yet sometimes, a bit of light breaks through...
We are pleased to announce FaithStreet Art Partner's next featured artist, Skip McKinstry. Born in Arkansas and raised in Hannibal, Missouri, Skip is an artist and graphic designer who lives in Oklahoma.
Skip has contributed a piece of artwork from a series of mediations on Genesis 1 and the work of the Holy Spirit, titled "Whispers 2: Movement on the Face of the Deep."
Often a bit of light will break through into my field of vision and I find myself stunned and charmed by something as simple as a flickering shadow on the sidewalk, or a faint reflection through a window. That is what I attempt to capture, coaxing stories out of the photographs I use as raw material.
The featured piece is part of a series which, in fact, began as iPhone photos of flickering shadows on a sidewalk. The shadows, formed by shrubbery moving in the constant Oklahoma breeze, reminded me of the rustle of wings. As I began to work with the images, what emerged was, to my eye, a reminder of the way the Spirit hovered across the face of the deep in Genesis 1:2. Our world, when we pause to observe it, can give us glimpses of the Creator’s story. We need not confuse nature with God, any more than we should confuse a work of art with the artist who created it, but we can certainly see the fingerprints.
Skip has also contributed a piece of artwork titled "Crossing Over" from his series, "Jesus Was A Sailor."
In three of the Gospel accounts, we have the story of Jesus getting into a boat, late in the day, with his disciples and setting sail to the other side. Tired, from a long day of teaching, Jesus went below and took a nap. As the sun began to go down, the calm seas turned turbulent and a storm came up that threatened to capsize the boat. The image, “Crossing Over,” comes from a series entitled “Jesus Was a Sailor.” In the image we have a sense of destination, and for those of faith we know that Jesus is on board. Isn’t it good to know that whatever storms come upon us, the Lord is with us?
We are grateful for Skip's partnership, and the beautiful art he has contributed to the FaithStreet app - a daily reminder to pause with intention, and notice the glimpses of our Creator's story.
